Sweet, M. (2011). Balloons over Broadway: The true   story of the puppeteer of Macy's parade. New York: Houghton. Balloons over Broadway is a lovely book full of intricate details which tells the story of Tony Sarg, the creator of the Macy's Parade balloons.  Tony was inventive even as a small child and constructed his first marionette puppet at six years old.  As he immigrated to New York he was hired to design windows for Macy's department store with puppets from familiar book characters.  These puppets moved with gears  and pulleys. Mr. Macy wanted to create a parade for his employees, many which were immigrants. Tony Sarg helped Mr. Macy's dream come true. The Macy's Parade began with costumes, floats and even real animals from the zoo.  The New York crowds were amazed, so the tradition continued but the animals started to scare the children. Mr. Sarg created types of puppets that were light but large out of the same material they designed the Goodyear blimp.  His first concepts were big but not high enough for all to see.  He soon devised a puppet that is akin to a marionette that would float above the parade audience.  Instead of having strings that manipulated from the top, Sarg's invention had ropes controlling the movement from the bottom.  Every year, Tony Sarg continued to create diverse puppets that filled the parade route for all to enjoy.  Inside the book cover of this book, Sweet, the author tells the backstory of Tony Sarg's life with real life articles, letters and drawings.  The typeface varies at times with pages that appear to have cut out letters.  In back cover of the book, Melissa Sweet tells about how she created the art for the book using all types of materials, watercolor and designing her own toys for inspiration.  She also writes further about the details of Tony Sarg's life, work  and quotes including a bibliography and sources.  The Smithsonian Magazine website has an article and photographs of Tony Sarg's earliest creations for the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade.
