Nelson, K. (2008).  We are the Ship.  New York: Hyperion. Kadir Nelson has created an impressive book unparalleled to any others. We are the Ship tells the story of the history of the Negro League Baseball, it is a nonfiction book that has tremendous artwork that could be in an art gallery included with the informative text.  The book’s chapters are in innings that chronically follow the Negro League and its players.  It provides background on talented but obscure players that most with the exception of historians might not know. The text is comprehensive formatted like a thick picture book, one can spend hours learning about these athletes and the history of the league. When baseball was organized and became a professional sport in the 1860s, a few of its players were Negro.  They were treated poorly as they were in society at that time and by the late 1800s, Negroes were not a part of the league.  Rube Foster was at the forefront of organizing a Negro league.  Some teams were flashy and provided entertainment, sometimes focused more on a show than athletic abilities. Nelson walks the reader throughout the annals and accounts of the players and teams.   The artwork includes a full two-page spread of the first Colored World Series and folds out to a four-page spread of both teams with their players, coaches and management along with their names.  Quotes throughout the book from famous players and managers give the book depth and authenticity.  Kadir Nelson has authored and illustrated a striking biography picture book of Nelson Mandela and has collaborated with many authors with his artwork.
