Drowned City is a graphic novel that chronicles the story and events of Hurricane Katrina and the aftermath in New Orleans. It is one of YALSA's Great Graphic Novels for Teens 2016 and The book is very detailed telling the story of how the hurricane started and progressed. It shows the opinions, attitude and action of the people of New Orleans and government officials are clearly documented. Brown shows how people tried to wait out the storm and then escape, along with drawings of those did and didn't. He retells of the suffering and inhumane conditions after the hurricane in a waterlogged New Orleans. The weeks of search and rescue on the missing by professionals and locals. He does not shy away by recalling the good and bad actions of people during this horrific time. He provides a clear well rounded story in his color illustrations in graphic novel style. His use of large pictures with inlays of smaller pictures make Drowned City come alive and very informative.
As presented in the textbook, history is relative to our students. They have heard of Katrina and in my area, the hurricane that followed, Rita. They know the stories - the tales are personal but most have to not remember it well. It is distant history to them, like 9/11 even though it happened in their life times. Books like Drowned City makes history come alive and relevant to a much audience.
Classroom connections include discussion, research about how the tragedy of Hurricane Katrina has changed local and national policy and procedure. Compare and contrast Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita and how people and the government responded differently. Students can create histoorical interviews both in person and via the internet with people that lived through Katrina in New Orleans and beyond. These types of historical interviews could be conducted with people that have lived through significant events. Students can interview from a historical perspective or the grandparents about their lives. I was There: Hurricane Katrina is a program from the History Channel documenting with personal narratives.
